Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin – February 4, 2020
Northern Crossarm Co. (https://crossarm.com) a leading producer of high-quality, pressure-treated wood products, will be attending the LBM Advantage Annual Buying Show, February 24-26 at Gaylord Palms Resort in Kissimmee, Florida. Founded in 1922, Northern Crossarm Co. has grown from a one-man manufacturing firm into one of the leading wood treating companies in the Great Lakes States area.
Attending Northern Crossarm Co. representatives will be meeting and networking with other like-minded industry professionals, as well as discussing their top pressure treated products. In particular, KDAT Brown will be on display. Kiln Dried After Treatment “KDAT” is a process that removes excess moisture from wood introduced by and during the treating process – a process that’s been perfected by Northern Crossarm over the last decade.
Unlike traditional “wet” or “green” treated lumber, KDAT Brown is kiln dried after treatment, improving both performance and stability. KDAT wood features many benefits as opposed to traditional lumber. Since up to 70% of all moisture content is reduced significantly, KDAT Brown is much lighter, easier to handle and is much easier to saw and plane. By kiln drying afterwards, the pressure-treated wood achieves improved performance and stability.
As someone who’s been involved with deck building for 30 years, I’m definitely a fan of Northern Crossarm’s KDAT (kiln dried after treating) lumber. If you take an ordinary piece of lumber that’s been treated, it will still be wet when you use it because chemicals and water have been pressure-treated into it. Because of that, over time that board will naturally shrink, which can be a big problem when you’re using them to create a deck frame. As the framing shrinks, it can warp and distort the composite or wood decking resting on it, which can lead to deck failure. That obviously isn’t good for anyone. By using KDAT lumber for our deck frames, we receive fewer callbacks and that’s good for business.

Another distinct advantage to KDAT Brown is its rich, finished color in deck, pergola, landscaping and fencing applications. Modern decks (both wood and composite) are typically supported by green or wet lumber that grays over time. KDAT Brown is much different – not only is it dried even longer to improve performance, but it also features a finished, rich brown color upon project completion. Not only does the brown color complement today’s modern composite decking, but it provides a finished look that doesn’t require any waiting to paint or stain in all wood deck applications.
